Dear Friend,

Let me tell you something of our orchestra...

We played our first concert in June 1981 after two old boys of St Thomas More High School approached me to assist in the formation of an orchestra. Much of what follows describes our evolution.

Our catchment area is based loosely on the Westcliff Deanery but includes Rayleigh, Benfleet and Canvey. Pupils of both St Thomas More and St Bernards are eligible and former pupils have proved a rich vein of talent. We can now field an adult line-up of quality which undertakes fund raising events. We charge no fees.

Our aims are to be self-sufficient, to support the liturgy and other parish events to which we may be invited. Our main aim however is to provide young musicians with an opportunity to enjoy playing all styles of music in an orchestra and to continue making music in good company when their school days are over. 230+ have passed through our ranks in twnety years. We are also delighted to welcome older, experienced members.

We are developing a very varied repertoire of light classics, modern arrangements like Beatles Medley, Disney Magic and Jesus Christ Superstar (which apperas on the video). We have played at masses, fetes, carol concerts and tours. Also at Westcliff Bandstand and the Cliffs Pavilion.

Rehearsals are at St Thomas More High School, 7.45 - 9.30pm on Tuesday evenings of term time.
We welcome mixed ages and abilities. No qualifications are necessary as rehearsals are open to all, but they do act as a prolonged audition so as to protect the quality of our public performance. Older musicians who are often committed heavily elsewhere are encouraged to come along especially before important events and the first Tuesday of the month.
We hope you maintain contact with us until the time you can help with the developmnet of younger players.

I hope this information has been of interest and we will be delighted if you just come along to rehearsal and introduce yourself. We look forward to meeting you.
